Check your Tax Return Refund

1. Use the IRS "Where’s My Refund?" Tool

The IRS offers an online tool to track your refund status. Here's how:

  1. Visit the IRS website: https://www.irs.gov/wheres-my-refund

  2. Have the following information ready:

    • Your Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).

    • Your filing status (Single, Married Filing Jointly, etc.).

    • The exact amount of your expected refund, as shown on your tax return.

  3. Enter the requested details and click "Submit."

2. Use the IRS2Go Mobile App

  1. Download the IRS2Go app from your app store (available on iOS and Android).

  2. Open the app and select the "Refund Status" option.

  3. Enter the same details as above (SSN/ITIN, filing status, and refund amount).

3. Call the IRS Refund Hotline

If you prefer to speak with someone, you can call the IRS automated refund hotline at 1-800-829-1954. Be prepared to provide your SSN, filing status, and refund amount.

When to Check Your Refund Status

  • E-Filed Returns: Refund information is typically available within 24 hours after the IRS acknowledges receipt.

  • Paper Returns: It may take 4 weeks before your status is updated.

Refund Status Updates

The IRS tool will display one of the following:

  1. Return Received: Your tax return is being processed.

  2. Refund Approved: Your refund has been approved and is being prepared for deposit or mailing.

  3. Refund Sent: Your refund is on its way to your bank or mailbox.

Delays to Watch For

  • Errors or incomplete information on your tax return.

  • Claiming certain credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC), which may delay refunds until mid-February.

  • Mailing a paper return instead of e-filing.
